FOUNDER Mr. Charles Freddie

A History of Domino Games in Croydon: The Legacy of Mr. Charles Freddie Mr. Charles Freddie, a Jamaican immigrant, arrived in the UK in the early 1960s and settled in Croydon. In the early 1970s, he began hosting domino games in the basement of his home at 38 Oakfield Road. These gatherings quickly became a popular social event, drawing friends and community members to enjoy this beloved pastime. Dominoes, a game deeply embedded in Jamaican culture, offered a way for men, and occasionally women, to connect, socialize, and foster community bonds. By the early 1980s, the popularity of these gatherings had outgrown Mr. Freddie's basement, prompting a move to an upper back room to accommodate more players. As interest in the games continued to grow, the community began rotating the hosting duties among various homes. Eventually, they started renting dedicated spaces, culminating in a long-standing venue at Soho Cheta on Portland Road, where the tradition has continued for approximately 36 years. Ken Thomas, who was introduced to the group by a colleague named Howie in the early 1970s, is now the longest-serving member of this domino-playing community. Thanks to the shared memories and information provided by Mr. Freddie's daughter, Annette, Ken and others can reflect on the rich history and lasting impact of these gatherings. This tradition underscores the importance of cultural practices in maintaining community ties and preserving heritage, demonstrating how a simple game of dominoes can bring people together and create lasting memories.
